Batman: Rest In Peace

Batman #676No, he didn’t die. And despite that title, he probably won’t any time soon.

BATMAN RIP is the title to an upcoming arc of Grant Morrison’s run on the Batman title that he has lorded over for around a year. With memorable arcs such as “Batmen around the World” and the introduction of Damien, Batman’s son by way of Talia, Morrison has taking turns with the Batman mythos that many thought just weren’t possible. Given the age of the character in print, not to mention films, book, cartoons, radio and cave paintings, it’s always interesting to see Batman taken in a direction that is not only surprising, but original.

RIP promises to be the culmination of everything Morrison has been planning. Newsarama has talked to both Morrison on the subject HERE and DC editor Dan Didio HERE.

Morrison’s attack plan has been to take into consideration all of the modern, silver and golden age Batman tales and somehow recapitulate them into a the life of a man that is technically only in his late 30’s. While some of the golden age silliness may seem impossible to reconcile with the modern gritty n’ grumpy Bats, Morrison is convinced it’s possible if certain tales are seen from different points of view.

If Morrison channels just a bit of the change he imbued the X-Men with a few years ago, we could be seeing Batman in a whole new light.
