How ‘Bout That OTHER Iron-superhero?
With a movie on the way Iron Man is the high-profile Marvel character these days, but Iron FIST made a subtle, and very well received comeback this year. We all know how much Bendis loves Luke Cage, as evidenced by him leading the New Avengers– but what of his ol partner, Danny Rand?
Daredevil fans know well how Danny was revealed to have been taking DD’s place for some time. When that ruse ended after Civil War, Marvel re-launched Iron Fit in his own title. Written by Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction the book was a great throwback to Kung-Fu films of the 70’s. Danny found himself battling ninjas in the streets of New York, and being led to a Kung-Fu torunament in Kun-Lun, the mythical city where he was given the power of the Iron Fist. Adding to the mythos, by making Danny the latest in a centuries long line of Iron Fist’s, the series took on a new sense on dimensionality.
Many consider it to be the sleeper hit of Marvel’s run last year. With Issue #17, a new creative team takes over. Writer Duane Swierczynski will be joined by artist Travel Foreman and will continue Danny’s adventures. Do yourself a favor and jump on when the new arc begins, and pick up Fraction/Brubaker’s run in trade. If you like pulp era superheroes, 70’s Kung-fu epics, a smarmy hero and lots of ninjas, you won’t be disappointed.
