Hands On With the Spore Creature Creator

If you can wrap your mind around such a thing, additional downloadable content for a game months away is available starting today.  And not just for some run of the mill game, but for one of the most highly anticipated of the year.  Of course it’s Spore, the new “God Game” from Sim City and The Sims creator Will Wright.  Once envisioned as “Sim Everything”, Spore allows the player to create an entire species and bring them civilization and technology, all the way from a simple microorganism to a multi-planetary force to be reckoned with.  Obviously, it’s a far cry from the hundreds of idiotic Sims add ons that have been released within the last decade.

Although the full version of Spore won’t be available until early September, the official site has released a (mostly) free mini-version of the software for Mac and PC starting today.  The Spore Creature Creator allows players to start early and, well, go ahead and create their creature to be used later on in the full game.  What you can do with them from that point on is somewhat limited, however.  You can save screenshots of your new critters and play around with some simple animations, but using them in the game environment is something that will have to wait for the full game.  The creators of Spore are hoping that the early creation of inter-species armies will help to already have the game populated at the time of release, taking advantage of some of the online aspects of the game.

You can download the Creature Creator starting today from this link at Spore.com.  A limited version is free, but a retail box with more textures and options should be available in stores this week for just ten bucks.  And be sure to drop by our thread in our video game forum and show off your critter.
