Xbox 360’s ‘NXE’ Reinvents The Console

If you have an XBox 360 connected to the web, you might have noticed a prompt for an update if you’ve powered your system on today.  Unlike many of the past system updates that added a few welcome features here and there, this one is more of a gamechanger.  The appropriately titled New XBox Experience is the latest firmware update to the console, but is one that completely rebuilds the interface from the ground up.  Gone is the blade interface we’ve known for three years, and in its place is a completely new user interface that somewhat resembles Microsoft’s Media Center.

While most of the changes are simply in the way of organization or new visuals, there are a few great additions to the firmware that make the upgrade worthwhile.  Firstly, if you have a Gold membership to XBox Live as well as an appropriate Netflix membership, you’ll be able to stream your instant queue directly through your 360.  The video quality will depend upon your connection speed, and there are a few select HD titles available.  The one drawback so far is that Sony is obviously jealous of the feature and has pulled all films owned by their studios.  Netflix has promised to resolve this, but the problem is likely not to be resolved in the near future.

The other big feature is that of Avatars and the functionality they bring.  Not at all unlike the Mii charecters on the Nintendo Wii, you can create a representation of yourself on the console.  These Avatars can be used in features like the Party system, in which you can connect with the avatars of your friends and share media and play games together.  Further functionality has been promised down the road, such as games like 1 vs. 100 where you can use your avatars in the game.

If you have a 360, you’ll be pleasantly surprised with how streamlined and functional the new interface is.  Plus, even with all of the great new features, the upgrade is free.  So you have nothing to complain about anyways.
