Rejoicing in Detroit?
Regardless of what team you root for in the NFL, you always have to feel a little bit of pity for the poor Detroit Lions. But there might be some dancing in the streets in the Motor City today! Matt Millen, GM of the Lions since 2001, has reportedly been removed as GM according to Foxsports.com. Millen, while a great football player, had no prior GM experience, nor even scouting personnel background. For those that don’t remember, he was a color analyst on TV prior to taking the job as GM. So his hiring in and of itself was always a curious decision.
During his tenure, he made horrible draft day and trade decisions. Prior to this year, he selected a wide receiver as the first round pick for 3 consecutive seasons, which made many Lions fans angry I’d bet, and many of the sports world in general simply perplexed. I mean, there are 21 other positions on the field that could also use an upgrade, particularly when talking about the Lions. How many times do you need to upgrade receiver? The only remaining question is what took Ford family so long to realize that this guy was running their team into the ground?
This decision clearly won’t change what the Lions can or cannot accomplish for the remainder of this season, but it’ll be interesting to see not only who replaces Millen, but come draft day, will the Lions actually make a decent choice in the first round? QB maybe??
