Animated Wonder Woman Feature to Hit in 2009

It’s official. Keri Russell, of Felicity fame, has been cast as everyone’s favorite Amazon, Wonder Woman.

The direct-to-DVD film has been slated for an early 2009 release, and is part of DC’s new animation line, which has so far featured Superman: Doomsday, Justice League: The New Frontier, and the recent Batman: Gotham Knight. Predictably enough, the film will be a retelling of Wonder Woman’s origin story, as many audiences know of the character’s name and image, but very little of her background.

Amusingly enough, her co-star from the acclaimed indie film Waitress, Nathan Fillion, has been cast in the role of Steve Trevor, Wonder Woman’s first romantic interest. “What I like about Steve Trevor is that he’s a very real guy. He’s very honest and he’s very natural. He doesn’t apologize for much. And he’s about as normal as a guy can be while hanging out with Wonder Woman,” said Fillion in a TV Guide interview.

In other casting news, Virginia Madsen has been cast as Hippolyta, Wonder Woman’s mother, and Rosario Dawson as Artemis, Wonder Woman’s chief rival. It has also been stated that Alfred Molina, already having experience as a comic book villian since his turn as Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man 2, will be playing Ares, the chief villain of the film.
