Blackbeard Sets Sail
The infamous pirate Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard, will be the focus of a new Dreamworks film.
Despite being one of the most well known and researched pirates of his era, Teach hasn’t been the focuss of many films– the best known of which is Disney’s Blackbeard’s Ghost from 1968. While the Pirate film was once a genre as popular as westerns or sci-fi films, the modern day pirate movie never really produced a hit until Johnny Depp put on some eye liner. His performance, and those three films were so unique, it would be difficult for anyone else to make a pirate film that wouldn’t seem to be cribbing somehow. Every pirate cliche and trope was used, so really the only avenue left would be a realistic and historical take on piracy.
While Dreamworks has given no details, ComingSoon.net reports that they have given screenwriting duties to David Franzoni, who has written other Oscar-winning historical films such as Amistad and Gladiator.
