According to the Hollywood Reporter, Columbia has acquired the rights to a sci-fi spec script called “Battle: Los Angeles.” The story follows a Marine platoon that faces off against alien invaders on the streets of L.A.This is the third or fourth big-budget scifi- feature acquired in as many months.

The Sci-fi channels has put no less than six one-hour sci-fi dramas into production for next fall. With Ronald Moore, JJ Abrams and Joss Whedon all developing new sci-fi series for the major networks it would seem that the genre is in on the cusp of another upswing in popularity.
