Google Friend Connect On The Way

Though Google has long been in the social web via aquisitions such as Orkut and YouTube, the emerging web collosus has yet to really internally develop a similar platform of its own.  The Mountain View company is hoping to change that and start anew with the recently announced Google Friend Connect.

Tech Crunch confirmed the beta release of the platform yesterday, and Google has finally gone public with it today, teasing its preview release to web site owners and application developers.  Essentially, Friend Connect will give social network functionality to websites that may not have had them previously.  Instead of creating yet another MySpace or Facebook clone, Google will use Friend Connect functionality to create the network out of the existing sites.

For a more detailed explanation of what Friend Connect is and what it will allow you to do, hit this link up from CNet for a good rundown.  And also don’t forget to drop by our own social area in our Sci / Tech forum.
