NBC to Apple: ‘Your DRM Isn’t DRM’ey Enough’
As you may have heard around the beginning of the new TV season, much to the dismay of fans such as The Office or 30 Rock, NBC decided to pull the plug on the shows they were offering for download on iTunes. At the time, no official and truly explanatory reason was ever given, but that may be coming to light now. Ars Technica is reporting that NBC now wants to come back to iTunes, but they are demanding that Apple address supposed piracy issues before they are given the privilege of Earl’s ’stache one more.
Of course, these concerns of piracy on iTunes (being mostly unsubstantiated) don’t also address NBC’s proprietary Hulu platform. Nor do recent comments from NBC make any mention that part of the fued between Apple and NBC was over the peacocks insistence that the price of show downloads be increased to about five bucks a pop.
File this one as another case of an aging company that just doesn’t get it. Thanks for the concern NBC, but we’ll likely stick to alternatives for the time being.
