Sci / Tech Chatter for June 19th
The past few months have been pretty big in the world of all things nerd. We’ve seen the announcement of the upgraded iPhone, gone through Firefox Day, and have looked through a ton of great photos sent to us by the newest Mars lander. Amongst all of the big news, it might have been pretty easy to miss out on some other stories. The gang in our Science and Technology forums have caught many of these lately. Here’s a summary of what has been going down, be sure to drop by the forum and join in on the conversation.
Ben Stein: Science leads to the gassing of Jews or something - Ender brought up this topic with the obviously satirical title that has been bringing up a lot of controversy lately. Ben Stein, popularly known as a deadpan actor and media commentator, has a new documentary film out called Expelled. The film brings up ideas of involving creationism in education, amongst other notions that haven’t exactly gone over well. Some interesting discussion cropped up out of this particular point which is worth a read.
Twitter refuses to uphold its TOS - Andorus had brought this to our attention, which detailed the problems that a user of the popular service was having relating to a borderline stalker. In a somewhat surprising move, Twitter went as far as to alter their terms of service so that they would not have to directly involve themselves. Some debate came up in this thread as to what Twitter could be definable as and accountable for.
Slow computer issues - Cerina had been having trouble getting her PC to cooperate, and as you might guess the conversation eventually led into a back and forth affair about PC’s and Macs. Eventually, Cerina took a look through some of the start up items on her PC that were the cause of the slow down. A good place to start for anyone who also might be experiencing similar problems.
