Tesla To Produce Sub $30,000 Electric Cars

The title to this entry might be a little confusing if you don’t know some of the background information, so let’s back up a little bit.  Named for legendary scientist and inventor Nikola Tesla, Tesla Motors has been producing some pretty spiffy electric cars since the company was founded back in 2003.  To date their most popular product has been the Tesla Roadster, an honest to goodness electric hot rod that many reviewers have seen fit to compare to its fuel guzzling brethren.

Sounds sweet, right?  Well, you get what you pay for since the Roadster typically costs upwards of a cool $100,000.  However, there’s been some good news for the rest of us this week as Tesla has promised us similar rides at or below $30,000 within the next five years.  Even more good news has come down the pipe in the past few days, as the Governator of California is luring the company to possibly increase production by cutting them certain tax breaks.  While this news is great for green car enthusiasts, it still doesn’t quite bring the car into the range of the increasingly popular Toyota Prius.  Yet.  Though the price and the horsepower is enough to draw some attention and possibly to bring the electric car into the true mainstream in the long run.

So if fate smiled upon you with the means, would you pick this puppy up?  Or do you think it will still be some time until this sort of technology is more accessible?  Hit up this thread in our Sci / Tech board and let us know.
