Volcanic Eruption in Chile

Andorus has shared with us this awesome photo of the volcanic activity occurring in Chile this past week. In it, you can see the ash rising from the volcano causing friction in a similar way to storm clouds, creating its own lightning.
The Chaiten volcano woke up from its nap and got downright pissy this past Friday, and has been showing signs of intensive activity ever since. Airborne ash has gone over the neighboring Andes mountains and has made it as far as Argentina in the past few days. The local Ministry of Interior has even reported that the ash has gone as far as twenty miles high at times.
For an idea of how massive the eruption has been, check out the below video from the Associated Press.

Haha, sweet, I got a front-page mention!
I should elaborate that this photo is a combination of the friction that naturally occurs in ash clouds (which produces lightning) AND an intense thunderstorm. Normally ash cloud lightning doesn’t get this bad, as far as I know.
