Yes it does and its based on THREE books thats it! It didn't start a movie and go to books. I want to keep LOTR forum but i think there are so many Sci FI movies and series that it might work out

[Let me preface this by saying I'm not a big sci-fi fan so I have no real intrest in this other than I think it's a good idea.]
You know a lot of suggestions come through here, most of which suck, but this one my friends I believe has real merit.
Here's some reasons why...
1)Conglomeration: Many speciality boards have been offered up as suggestions. One for instance is Farscape. Farscape is a popular franchise for many, but probably not big enough to warrant a board of it's own. Now talk of a Farscape movie has come around, which in effect shoots down the "Talk about it on TV board" argument. The movie-TV combo also happens with Stargate, the recently deleted X-Files, and possibly B5. A sci-fi board would combine these multi-genre franchises into one centralized location.
2) Convenience: As I mentioned above, many of these larger sci-fi franchises are multi-genre. So if say one would want to talk about the X-Files movie that will eventually come out, where would they do it? Movie talk about a TV show goes where? Perhaps someone who wanted to talk about how a movie will tie into the TV would just not post out of confusion about the proper board to post on. A general sci-fi board would be a matter of convenience for those fans.
3) It's time for a change: One should not change just to change, but the status quo is not always the best course either. It's been at least a year since a new board was created. It might be time for something new and fresh. The movies forum will be fine as will the TV.
This is probably the most solid idea for a new board in quite awhile. And what's the worst that could happen? It could fail and be deleted. And is that so bad? Which brings me to another idea I would carry the banner for, and that's the rotating board. But that's a twenty minute post for another time.

But as the Matrix 2 gets released and other sci fi movies get released then people will visit. It might be slow at first but I think it'll pick up

I would definately support this idea, just because I think there really could be enough posts. Take the X-Files for example - something that already has a decent nightly following would have an alternative to being relegated to the TV board. Add SF films, other TV shows (not counting Star Trek or Star Wars, obviously because the forums already exist) and also books
yup, I know... we have a books board too. But almost the entirety of my reading material (which actually amounts to quite a lot) happens to be sf. With new titles appearing in the genre every week, as well as the numerous literary awards to follow (Hugo, Nebula, Stoker, Phillip K. **** , etc.) you could have quite a lot of traffic. If (and I admit this may be a big if) we can generate the interest to begin with and keep it going.
If there is enough interest to get this started, I would definately support it. Besides the fact that I think it has more merit than the proposed teen forum.

Actually this was brought up once before. Unless JA changed his mind since then, he said no. Sci Fi books in the Books; Sci Fi movies in the Movies; Sci Fi series in the TV. That was his feeling before but as I said, he could have changed his mind.
Personally I like the idea but it's not overly needed.

This isn't a bad idea, but I don't think it's something we'll look at developing right now. My reasoning would be that a general sci-fi forum doesn't give any more specialization than the general Movies, TV or Books boards. The whole point of making a new board is to encourage discussion in a particular area or topic by giving it its own place. The problem here is that all we'd be doing is moving sci-fi threads from one general board to another general board.
For example, right now a Matrix thread exists in a sea of other individual threads at Movies. but by putting it in a sci-fi forum, would we be encouraging more discussion on that topic? I don't think so, because it would still exist as a lone topic in a sea of other individual sci-fi topics. In fact, I'd argue that it might actually hinder discussion because now we would have some people talking about Matrix at Movies and some people talking about it at Sci-fi. This same sort of splitting would go for all sci-fi topics, whether movie, TV show or book.
So for better or for worse, we've ended up with a system where the entertainment topics are covered by medium (movies, TV, books, video games) and not by genre (sci-fi, horror, drama, fantasy, etc). Since the two categorizations are essentially redundant, I think we'd prefer to stick with this setup since any genre-based forums will simply be overlaps of the other general entertainment boards.
