Many people have them. But yes they are against the rules.

I specifically wrote I didn't care because if I didn't, it would look like I was accusing the system of being unfair. I wasn't, I was just curious because I wanted a clarification of the rule. I'm sorry if I offended you.
Thanks for clearing it up, JMB. That answer was all I wanted.

Hey you didn't offend me man, just that obivously you knew there was a rule in place... so why bring it up? All you did was possibly create a situation where-by the administration would have to do something. Mandard has already threatened to disallow the use of gifs if people keep doing it. It's basically a spoil the fun type thing. Kinda like a little brother that see's his sister eating a cookie... then the brother goes and asks his parents why she's eating it now because dinner is soon. Then the parents take the cookie away. Now the brother could have just got a cookie too and been happy with his sister, but now he's just been a butt and ruined the whole thing.

Well, I do care about animated GIFs. I only have a 56k connection and even the static avatars slow things down a little too much.
Torch, I don't quite follow what you're saying. Are you suggesting that rather than complaining about other people's animated GIFs, we should just get our own ones? How long do you think that would last?
Mandard and JA don't have to ban GIFs altogether, all they have to do is ask the parties in question to change their avatars. (Note the plural - freemo is not the only mod with an animated avatar.) It's not like it would be difficult to contact them either. Otherwise, it looks like they're applying a double standard, even if that's not their intention. As it is, it seems a bit strange that, a week since this thread was started, no action has been taken.

What I'm basically saying is other than a bandwidth issue (which I guess is way he can't have animated avatars), who gives a flying rat's ass if someone has one? That's the problem with people here always *****ing and moaning about stuff that just doesn't really matter. Now if someone had an animated avatar that show naked boobies bouncing or some other crazy thing then I'd expect people to tell all so we could all get a look at the goods... I mean so that MD or JA could nick the bad stuff in the bud. But other than those two issues, why care?

You're missing Jedi Economist's point, Torch. With a dial up modem, static pictures make the page take longer to load. The more pictures/images (and this includes all those smilies), the long the load time. Now when any of those get animated, it takes even longer to load. The more animation, the slower the load. Especially with older computers.
And no, not everyone can afford to get cable.

I didn't miss the point Silky, I mentioned the bandwidth thing. But anyway besides the issue, the animated avatars really don't take that much longer to load. But like I said that's besides the issue. I was, quite ironically, *****ing and moaning about people *****ing and moaning about stuff that really doesn't matter. My compliant was in direct relation to Sherlock and his poke, whether intended or not, at the issue when he clearly new there is a rule about this and if he was fuzzy about something all he had to do was ACTUALLY read the avatar thread that is right here in the feedback forum, but no he decides he wants to make a big stir about it.
So like I said, it's all very ironic when you think about.

Loading time on a personal computer has nothing to do with bandwidth usage, to my knowledge. Obviously you don't have an older computer or maybe you don't have dial up. Avatars/images, especially animated ones, very much do take longer to load. I know, I had an older computer two years ago plus dial up. I had to just forget about some threads. There wasn't a limit on images, then. Some threads, with lots of smilies made my computer crash.
BTW I did get the irony thing.

Yeah anyway, dispite how some of my posts might come across I'm all very mellow and jokingly serious about all this... thought I'd mention that.
Anywho... Silky, well my computer is 7 months old - so by now it's way out of date. I heard the new issues have transporters as standard equipment. and yeah I'm on a dial-up... 56k actually. Had to give up the cable modem when I left work. But all in all I do understand the issue, I might have gotten definitions crossed and/or unjustly merged though as I've always lumped bandwidth in with the issue of loading times.
Yeah, my old one was probably five years old then. It was better than nothing, though.
And I know you're a good guy, Torch.

I actually had to stop and wonder if Doctor Doom was one of my aliases... for a moment I actually had to sit there and think about. I was like, no you've chatted with Doctor Doom when you were a mod. Then I was like, yes but you talked to yourself as the Inferno too. Then I was like... man this is too much I'm leaving to get some air you guys figure it out.

Transporters? You mean that they actually have computers that can transfer a person from one computer to another? Man, I want one of those. Posts: 6219 | From: North Georgia | Registered: Aug 2001
