It makes it much easier to locate the members who actually have lives off the 'Net. That way, they can be hunted down and assimilated like the rest of us.

I have just over 1000 post counts, and have been here for more than a year. Do I need to be assimilated, or not?

Hmmmm...you may be a borderline case. If you're still under 1500 six months from now, we might have to quaratine you in your home to prevent outside visitors from coming between you and your computer...

Yes, you are walking the line, Obsidian. Either you get 2000 posts before May 31st, or we will have to quarantine you in your house, like NumberSix stated.

Well, technically, there's very little that we actually "need". This entire board could be written off for a lack of need.
But for better or for worse, it's general practice for most message boards to show a member's location, homepage, e-mail, a signature, an avatar and yes, their post count. None of these things are essential. But most people like having them and are used to having them, so that's what we do.

I've gotten to the point now where I don't really give a crap about any post count. At least not my own.
I used to do the whole "celebration thread" thing when I would reach a certian point, 'cos at that time I thought it actually mattered. It's pretty much saying "Wow, look at me, I have no life outside of my computer!".
I hit 3,000 a while back and I'm like "Eh, cool. A nice round number." I care not.
It would be usefull if you could actually tell how many posts one person has, but everyone has had an alias or two so it doesn't really matter.

Me too. I mean, part of that reason might've been the fact that I abandoned the Cantina some 1500 posts ago, but in any case, I actually dislike staying a nice round number, whenever I see the 0's line up I try to get off of it as soon as possible. Gut instinct, I guess.

I try not to geek out about my post count... I have a fairly low P.C. for someone who's been here for nearly two years.

Take a look at my post count and think again.
I like having post counts. They make newbies feel inferior. Hell, they make me feel inferior. Sh!t.

That has a tendency to happen when you only post in one forum.
