NN should start a IRC chatroom! and get a java client to connect to it (for all those members who don't know IRC but want to be in the chat) I'd set up a channel on DALnet or something...

UBB hasn't come out with a chatroom feature yet? Eeek... Kind of lagging behind ezboard on that one, I guess. Chats are fun... If you did one, I think it would be nice for each forum to have their own. I mean, with as many members as NN generally has on the board, a single chat might be too much for some... But if everyone did want to get together they could go to the Cantina chat... Works for me.

For a while we were chatting in the AIM chats. Mostly a few members that really had no life at all... I think the most that it got up to was about 20 people or so at once...

In my opinion it comes down to... why try to be everything when you can just be really good at one thing? There are plenty of AIM, MSN, Yahoo Chats and other ways to chat. We have problems now (like any community), but spreading ourselves thin should only heighten them. Nightly is a message board, if you wanna chat take it to AIM or something. That's my opinion.

Well, I know a way we could set up a permanently Nightly chat on AIM, because they do this at the Jedi Council.
We decide on what to name the chatroom, such as "Nightly.net chat". At anytime, someone can invite themselves there. It would set up a room that would remain active as long as someone is there. If it goes inactive, it only has to be started up again by someone inviting themselves to "Nightly.net chat".

If you guys want to try that, go for it.
You can't search chats on aim. A chat on IRC (internet relay chat) would increase hits on nightly.net for sure and generate more people. it would also be up 24-7 by a bot that is ran by the server so we wouldn't have to stay in it 24-7. IRC is simple to use, very customizable and enjoyable too. Im willing to create, Moderate, sign moderaters and what not if it will be seen as the offical nightly.net chatroom

Try this to see what I mean: Click on your AIM username, and select Send Chat Invitation. In the "chat room" box, type in "Nightly.net chat". It will create a room titled that. From then on, me, or anyone else, can type in "Nightly.net chat" and it will take me to your chat. For instance, type in "A JC Jolly Good Time" and that will take you to the chat for TF.N.

My whole point is to offer a service to NN members and attract new members as well. Not just keeping it exclusive to current NN members.

Well, how are they going to find your chat here on Nightly if they don't know about Nightly? If you could find a place to advertise it, that'd be great. But I don't know how we'd pay for it.

Have you used IRC? you can put alot of stuff in the Topic part of your channel. People can search for keywords or browse all the topics. Many people search channels and what not. It doesn't cost anything to get a channel.

I had IRC on my old computer because my Usenet group has its own chat there. Works well enough for us (tho' I haven't re-DLed it yet since switching computers). The biggest barrier to its acceptance here, though, is that IRC is much less user-friendly (read: "shiny and flashy") than other, more GUI-based chat programs (especially AIM). At least, that was my experience with it.

I dunno. I guess I'm just not that keen on this idea. We had a chat room early on and it was never used. I think people found that if you wanted to have a good discussion, it's easier to use the boards and if you wanted to chat, it was easier to use your own chat clients with the people you wanted to talk to. The problem is that in a chat, you need to keep it to a reasonably small number of people, they need to get along at least fairly well and they all have to have some interest in whatever is being talked about. I don't think it's practical to expect that when considering the whole of nightly, especially when we'd already have to compete with people chatting on their own over AIM, MSN, etc.

i think a problem would be members who dont get a long fighting in the chat rooms though...there would be no one to moderate them.

Oh my God, you mean they would have to handle themselves like mature adults instead of being babysat?
