Odds of winning are worse than the lottery.

quote:The odds of winning the lottery (guessing six numbers from 1 to 50 correctly) are 1 in 15,890,700 bets. If you bet every week for one year, that’s 52 bets, which increases your odds of winning to about 1 in 303,000.
Every year in the United States, 6,000 people are struck by lightning.
Out of a population of 250,000,000 people, the odds of getting struck are 1 in 41,667 — about 10 times more likely than winning the lottery.

my dad has been struck by lightning 3 times. he 'use' to be a tree murderer, and all 3 times he was up in a tree and got struck. though one of those times, he didn't have a harness strap on, and he plummeted to the ground about 40 ft. in the air. luckily, the tree top that they had cut down previously, had broken his fall. he pretty ****in lucky. he's always lived on the edge.
he is still a tree murderer, but he does it with heavy machinery now. excavating.

That's not true, every week there is a new set of numbers drawn, so every week whether you play every week or not, your odds are the same. I know people that buy $50 dollars a week, every week for a year, going buy your statement they would have pretty good odds. The numbers change every week, so every week their odds are 50:15,897,700! Unless Im slow...

That came from a teacher's guide, Dr. Shady. In fact, I think its scenario was only addressing buying a single $1 ticket at a time.

Your odds of winning on a given day do not change, but your odds of winning on any day do improve the more you play. So, if you were to buy a lotto ticket every day for a year, your chances of winning on November 27th are no better than your chances of winning on April 19th, but because you play every day for a year, your chances of winning on any one of the 365 days do increase.

It might be easier to think of it in terms of if you picked the same numbers every day and waited until they drew the numbers that matched. If there's 20 balls total and they choose 5, then the odds of picking exactly the right numbers are
20 x 19 x 18 x 17 x 16 = 1,860,480
So your odds of winning on any given day are 1:1,860,480. So, theoretically, after 1,860,480 days, every single possible combination will have been drawn. Theoretically, you would have to win. Therefore, if you bought a ticket every day for 1,860,480 days, your odds of winning would be 1:1. But if you only bought ONE ticket, you'd be back to the original 1:1,860,480. So the more you play, the more likely you are to win.

But isn't that assuming that every combination will be picked precisely once? What if certain combinations were picked more than once?

For any given lottery drawing, the number of possible combinations is the same. Only one combination wins.
Example: there are 1 million possible combinations, each represented by a square on a giant checker board. If you buy one square, you have one in a million chances to win. So the more squares you by, per drawing, the more chances you have to win, per drawing. The odds do not carry over time.
If you buy all the squares for tomorrow's drawing, you cannot lose. Of course, other people can buy all the squares too. Then you would split the jackpot equally with all winners.
