I'm just asking because over in the Indy forum, the Skiff Guard has been MIA for quite some time. Maybe he's around but is keeping himself hidden. But judging from posts, he's remained silent for several months now.
It isn't a big deal or anything but I was just curious.

Biggs posted today in Prequels, previous "post" was in October last year. Biggs was around and "posting" almost 1 post every month up until then.
the skiff guard posted quite often up until July of last year. He reappeared for two posts this January.
Just because someone doesn't "post" though doesn't mean they aren't "reading" what's going on. As for if they're on enough to mod their boards... I haven't been aware of any problems which means something right? Although with that said, an effective moderator is one that is actively involved in the board they moderate. But ultimately this is all a decision for MD and JA to make and discuss really.

Just b/c one doesn’t post doesn’t mean one isn’t around.

Sometimes, it really wouldn't hurt to check and see if your favorite Mod is still breathing. Just find an objectionable post, then pound on the " " button until the Moderator finally rises from its coffin and tells you to knock it off.

but moderators aren't only for 'police' purposes, they are also there to try and help bring more traffic, and try and create interesting topics, and so forth. 'lurking around' doesn't really do that.

Let me put it this way, if a board has sickly traffic that needs pushing just to get a few posts, then the mod needs to do more to promote more conversation, toherwise the board will die a slow, but painless death. Take it from me, I have expericen in the matter of sadly letting a board almost die, though I helped reinvigorate it somewhat later. In the end, though it didn't matter since the forum shut down completely....
Then there are the boards where mods, if anthing have to slow things down or act more as enforcers...
It really depends a lot on the individual boards...

Well, I would expect any moderator to be somewhat active and to pop up every once in a while to add five cents worth.

yeah, me too jedigoat. but again, things have changed. they don't have to do that anymore...they just have to keep an eye out, and make sure nothing is getting out of hand.
though i have noticed some things get out of hand in the music forum, and nothing be done about it.

Hey, leave Skiff Guard alone. He's cool. He's from Massachusetts like me. He's got curley hair. That means he's cooler than any of you and don't mess with him.

No, I love skiff. I wish he was around all the time. I miss him (not as much as Dana)

I would think that people who post more would tend to make more effective moderators as they'd have a better grasp on member dynamics. And I think this topic speaks for itself in demonstrating that members find a certain security in actually SEEING the moderators of a particular forum posting rather than just assuming they're there.

I posted something where I called some celebrity an idiot, so Mandard deleted it. A couple minutes later, somebody insulted me with a far more lewd term... Mandard did nothing.
How am I supposed to take any of these Mods seriously?

*shrugs* I said some not all of the members. Obviously this topic wouldn't have been created if there weren't some insecure people among the boards.

Well, I'm the one that created the thread. Insecure? Nah, I really just wondered how often you had to be around. Plain and simple. I really don't give a crap how often the Skiff Guard stops by the Indy forum. I just think that he's a cool guy and he should stop by more often.

exactly, if they don't have time, they should be replaced with someone who does.
