I have problems logging on all the time.I will be able to access Nightly for maybe an hour to two hours and then the "page not found"message will show up and I won't be able to access Nightly for a couple hours at a time. It's really annoying and if anything at all can be done about it,it will be appreciated. Also,it's good to know I am not the only one having this problem.

This problem is getting worse, at least for me anyway. This is the first time i've been able to access nightly all week, and i've tried on several different computers.

I used to have this problem all the time (as evidenced by my posts in this thread), but I haven't had the problem win awhile (::crosses fingers: .

For me at least, I have yet to see any pattern or correlation to the 'blackouts'. Only the very general PC running windows, but that can't be it because most of the PCs accessing Nightly are probably running various Windows and don't have any trouble.

I started having this problem, so I found a couple of ways around it:
1. Cleaning out cache Or 2. Rebooting Or 3. Using different browser.
However, as with the most current occurrence of this problem, my avatar doesn't show properly in the new browser that I'm having to use - it just says Avatar Image - yet the other peoples avatars are showing. Not a big problem, but I felt I should point it out.

I was just paroozing through the site this morning and came upon this thread. I wish I saw it earlier. The problem is indeed with DNS, but not on our end.
Nameservers for nightly.net: Name Server: NS1.FOCALHOSTING.COM Name Server: NIGHTLY.NET
NS1.FOCALHOSTING.COM is correct, but the second is not. Nightly.net resolves to an IP on a server that does not have DNS running. Even though the second nameserver is supposed to act as a "backup," it is still used very actively. This is why some of you can get to nightly.net sometimes, and not other times. This is also why sometimes you can reach it with www.nightly.net and other times with nightly.net.
Whoever has access to change the nameservers to nightly.net, change the second one from NIGHTLY.NET to NS2.FOCALHOSTING.COM and everyone's problems will vanish magically.

Yeah, I suspected this from a little while back when Darth Q and others started mentioning that they believed this involved DNS.
The problem here is that the person who can change the nameservers refuses to do so. So this has been a bit of an awkward impasse that I was a little reluctant to make public. I didn't want to come out and slander chris or anything, but the fact is that he's not been willing to fix this. He's pretty much indicated that he wants nothing to do with nightly, but he won't give up the domain name either. If nothing can be worked out, we may have to get our own domain name to finally get past all this. Obviously, we're not in a hurry to ditch nightly.net so I hope that it doesn't come to that, but we may have no choice.
But thanks for confirming this, Alex.

I've attempted to contact Chris again. We'll see what comes of it. Either he can give me the ability to change the nameservers or he can do it himself. It's not like it's a time consuming task. This needs to be fixed one way or the other.

We could always go for a total forum makeover akin to the switch from red to blue and the upgrade in the UBB that happened however many years ago. Then we could call it renightly.net or supernightly.net.

I don't know anything about server functions but I take it that [as a temporary measure] if I couldn't get access Nightly at www.nightly.net I ought to be able to access it by just typing in nightly.net in the address bar, yes/no?

Whoa, I should've seen this thread earlier!
I haven't been able to access Nightly AT ALL from home for about 1 month now. I can only access it when I'm on a computer that has a DSL connection.

Actually, I know what the problem is, and it is a problem with the DNS host which provides hosting services for nightly.net, or it is a problem with multiple registrar entries at the domain registrar.
Every time you access a website using its canonical domain name (www.nightly.net or nightly.net), regardless of what the URI path (the rest of the URL) is, an individual DNS lookup is performed on your computer to locate the IP address of the nightly.net webserver. Since the DNS entries for nightly.net are incorrect, intermittent problems across the world with the NS records for nightly.net will continue to arise, until the server which has the SOA (Start of Authority) DNS record is corrected. The correction will then propogate throughout the internet to all of the local DNS servers that our computers use to translate the domain name to its corresponding IP address.
Since I own a web hosting corporation, I run my own DNS server, and was able to override the settings provided at the SOA (ns1.focalhosting.net / nightly.net) to the correct IP address for the webserver, and that has alleviated the problem. To the rest of you, I suggest that you continue to alert the moderators/admins of this site that the problem is intermittant and due to an incorrect DNS record at the SOA Nameserver.

I just realized this thread was two pages long and thus the information I posted was already here.
Consequently, you can ALWAYS access nightly.net's homepage by visiting the following URL. If the page comes up, the server is running, if it doesn't then the server is not running. Thus, if you can access nightly.net's homepage using the following URL, but any name-based addresses don't work, then you know the DNS issue still exists.

If you have access to modify the DNS server your computer uses, you may simply use the IP address of my nameserver, which will alleviate any problems you have accessing nightly.net, since I have overridden the SOA records here.
If you don't know how to modify the DNS server entries on your computer, OR if you are using AOL, I would suggest trying to find another solution.
The DNS server you can use to alleviate this problem is: 64.144.8.154. Feel free to use it only on computers that have problems accessing nightly.net.

OH, and it would be nice if those of you who did switch over to my DNS server could only switch to it when you had problems finding nightly, and then switch back to your regular DNS server at other times.
