I have been coming to Nightly on and off for a little over a year, now. I don't always post in the Lyceum, but I read it often. It used to be an interesting forum, but in recent months I have noticed the members of that forum have reduced themselves to little more than shouting matches, and cutdown fights. I think a major factor is the fact that many of the members whom frequent that forum tend to "hijack" a thread, and digress from the topic at hand.
Case in point: I started a thread on Gas Mileage. The subject was to discuss why car companies are able to create a V12 that makes 1000 horse power, and still get 24 MPG. My intent was to ask why smaller engines do not have the same technology to make them equallally efficient.
However, another member (Femurbone), took the thread way off topic and started saying that there are other ways to save gas (carpool, public transit, etc). After his post, I quoted what he said, and stated:
quote: True, but that is not the subject of this thread. If you want to talk about other ways of saving gas, then start another thread. Don't high jack this one.
This should have closed the matter, but it didn't. Right after that, Femurbone posted another response similar to what I had expressed was off topic. This action was intentional, and I feel that it was intentionally made by Femurbone as an indirect insult to me and my request to stay on topic. I find this very annoying and suspect that this type of posting may be,in part, why the Lyceum has degenerated over the last few months, because it causes frustration with the members who wish to discuss the topic at hand. This, in turn, causes emotions to boil over, and you get what the Lyceum is currently going through: immature cutdown quips, and a lot of off topic digressions.
It is my suggestion that the moderators of this board need to remind the members of the Lyceum, that in addition to refraining from flaming people, they also need to stay on the topic at hand when responding. I further suggest that when the moderators notice a thread going off topic that they edit that particular response, just as they would a flame.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll take a look and see what I can do.

I see what your saying. Case in point, I made a reply in that same thread, tried to express my thoughts, you replied to the contrary, that was that. But, some of them after you speak your mind, continue to nit pick and find another angle to "argue" with you about instead of simply stating otherwise.

cuckoo already gets enough **** for the suggestions to stay on topic he already makes. it's like in a thread where we were talking about whether the u.s. is making to many enemies and someone comes in and starts preaching to us about revalations and accepting jesus into our hearts before the armaggeddon comes.
example:
quote:So all I can tell you is, get your heart right with God and accept His gift of Salvation through His Son Jesus Christ and His shed blood for you and all people. Let not your heart be troubled, for a better place awaits you in Heaven, which will be on earth after Christ's initial 1000 year reign of peace and justice. Christ is the greatest hope a man can have, and you can through simple acceptance of the gift of grace from God Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth. Ask God to come into your heart and bring peace to your soul. He will come.
pages and pages of that ^
having seen a million political threads degenerate into a "the bible is truth / no it's not" argument he was asked both nicely and not so nicely by the other posters to stop hijacking the thread with his preaching. after every request he rattled on and on about "i will not be silenced about the truth, how can you not see it, etc..'
so finally cuckoo asks politely for him to try nd stay on topic and perhaps start a new thread if he wants to tangent off into a theological debate. he also asks people to knock off their negative comments towards him. the poster continues to go on and on about how his beliefs will not be silenced.
the whole ordeal of course gets twisted into cuckoo is opressing the christian poster from sharing his opinion by asking him to stay on topic. and when i start a new thread to ask a question about a quote in revelations that was brought up in the original thread i'm acused of doing it just to spite the opressed poster which has had no thread edited or deleted by any moderator or administrator.

Well.......isn't using public trasportation a way to cut down on gas mileage?

Not for the public transportation vehicles, it's not! The more passengers/weight they have to haul around, the more gas they have to waste.

I'm gradually growing thicker skin regarding the backlash I get from doing moderator-type things. I just don't want to appear apathetic either.

yeah, cuckoo gets a lot of baffle, when it isn't him doing it. he's just being a moderator. i'm starting to post more in the lyceum, but i am still more of a lurker, but i have seen many times, including the thread ming is talking about, where it winds up that cuckoo is opressing peoples beliefs, or is just being too hard, when that isn't the case at all. cuckoo has probably got the hardest...no, he does have the hardest moderator job out there.
