I know this has been talked about before. But there is a lot of Sci-Fi that is not covered by the current boards. Yes you can talk about them on the Movies/Books/Television respectiviely. but I think it would be more interesting to have a single place to post about Science Fiction. Just curious to see what others thought about it.

well, i'm not really so hot into sci-fi flicks or anything like that, but i think ES does have a failry valid point.
i definately think it should be a up for a good discussion, and up for a possibility of one being made. whether or not it will be successful, i do not know, but who knows. it's got a shot.

I think that if we were to get a sci fi board then Star Trek would have to go.
I am as big a fan as the average neter, I have went in there but everything thats covered on the small board can be covered in the sci fi board in like a monthly check up or something...

good point. that, and star trek REALLY doesn't get that much traffic. so, it would actually be wise to maybe just change Star Trek to "Sci-Fi" or whatever.

Wouldn't fly because Monty Python doesn't fit into that category. Now if you could come up with a nifty board name that could include many of those off-the-wall science fiction seiries as well as things like Monty Python... Then you'd be in business.

I'm not sure that is necessarily a reflection of the response a general sci-fi board might get. Before the LOTR board there were only a few threads spread around nightly about it. Mostly they were LOTR vs Star Wars or similar types of dumb comparison threads. But now that there is a LOTR board it has a wide range of discussions. While none of the tv shows/films I mentioned above would be able to support a board by themselves, I think a more general sci-fi board would get enough response to make it worth having around.
As for doing away with the Star Trek board, The Matrix board has fewer posts and it could be thrown into the Sci-Fi Catergory. Should it be done away with as well? I don't think so. Both of them have made a big impact on popular culture and have their own large fan base. They can generate enough interest on their own to support a board. A general sci-fi forum would give us a single place to discuss the films/movies/tv shows/scifi conventions etc... that on their own would not support a board.

Star Trek would not have to go. That's like saying all the SW boards would have to go, too. Just because ST is a bit slow right now doesn't mean it doesn't do well. It's held it's own since the board was made.
Sci Fi is so much more than just ST or SW. I believe that's the point ES is making. I love Sci Fi and would like to talk about other stuff besides ST or SW.

Of course you could. That's one of the points of having a Sci Fi board. Also if they do change the Books and Comics board to Comics and Animation; having a Sci Fi board would allow for Sci Fi book discussions still.

Star Trek has had a great impact on pop culture yes..
Star Wars is more pop culture, these boards were made form Star Wars not Star Trek. I do watch star trek not religously but I do like my occasional Klingon for a hour or so.
But the thing is Star Trek just had a new movie out not long ago and in that period the board didn't jump greatly... When Reloaded comes out the matrix board is going to be hopping with question, ideas, and useless movie trivia...
star trek has Enterprise which in all purposes is a really good show, but the fan base is dwindling..
and really all that can be covered in Star Trek can be covered in sci fi...

We could move Trek talk to Lando. The TIE Fighter would love that.

You don't have to tell me about the movie and whatnot. I know. But just because you don't watch ST dosen't mean others don't. They read the books, play the games, collect the action figures; just like SW fans do with SW.

Gee a Moderator who cares about her board. How aweful.
Arguing about which boards topics are more popular is silly. It's obvious after the recently announced closing of the animation and The Writer's Guild boards that the Admins usually only close a board when it is not getting any posts. Star Trek is much more active than several of the smaller boards. I think it supports enough discussion to warrant its own board. But a Sci-Fi board would give us place to discuss other sci-fi topics that are not covered on the other boards.
Why do the threads proposing new boards always have to degenerate into a argument over which boards should be closed?

I feel that it's not entirely necessary, as all you really have to do is bring this stuff up in the designated medium's board. There is no reason why you cant discuss Farscape, or Dune in the Television and Book forum. There isnt anything stopping you. But on the otherhand, im not completely opposed to the idea, if you make this board I'll post on it.

Yeah but a more general Sci-Fi board can go beyond just discussing films, tv shows, or books. Sci-Fi conventions, toys/collectables, art etc... could all fit in there.
