This is an idea from a few years back that never got played out.
When a huge movie like Spider-Man or X-Men comes out the movie forum quickly gets several threads on the subject (causing some to complain that fresh topics that don't have anything to do with others are flooding).
To combat this some of us in 2000 suggested that we occassionally open up temporary boards to deal with the excess traffic of these conversations.
When the ferver dies down the board can be closed, perhaps to make way for the next mega-movie. Or, if conversation warrants, it can stay open.
It's just an idea. I should have tossed it out again last week but I wasn't thinking.

Good Idea, but I think it'd just be alot more trouble for the Admins, than it's worth, to create a board for a few weeks, then close it again...

Yeah it's not a bad thought. But there are plenty of other things to talk about that are on peoples minds than Spidey or The Uncanny X-Men. Not everyone rushes to the theaters (or a downloading machine as the case may be) to see these flicks ... that's just some peoples hangup. Plus, I for one, don't consider Spidey and the X-Men as huge a film experience as you make them out to be. I like The X-Men though.

Or we could make a new board, and name it "Fad Board" and then the admins wouldn't have to bother to change it and all.

I think it would do very well. like the Matrix board. Its a good board but its just not strong enough. 2 weeks it will kill but it will die down in 2 months and then you have another 3 months for the next movie..
maybe with the closings we could open one up just to use for few months and maybe turn it into a secret forum while we wait for the next big thing to arrive..

We just need to have some more hard assed mods here at Nightly. Sure no one likes them, but admit it... you all appreciate the structure and consistency of a hard ass. I for one can tell you all that I like those hard asses.

That's the best idea in this thread. Not a great idea, but still the best in this thread. ^_^

You know what I think would work? Creating one or two boards with a generic colour scheme and just the plain Nightly banner. The admins can name it "X-Men Forum" or whatever they wish, and everyone can post post post until the topic wears thin. Then, when a new craze comes along, Mandy or JA can rename the forum, delete all of the threads (maybe archive a few, if need be) then start anew with Spider-Man or whatever the new craze happens to be. It wouldn't take up much space and people would stop whining. Quite similar to the original idea suggested, but the forum would be re-used over and over. If a certain topic creates lots of interest, it can be considered for a permanent forum. Good idea, oui?

I'm not sure if the UBB can do what the following board can, but at www.cmgsccc.com/forums they are able to have "sub-forums" linked inside a main forum. What they do is change the sub-forum's topic every so often based on popular discussion. Anyway ie. the Xbox forum did have a sub-forum called DOAX: Vollyball a month or so ago, recently it was then changed to Mech Assult.
BTW - you have to be logged in at that board to see the rest of the forums, but MD or JA, if you don't get what I'm explaining... it'd be worth a quick register to check it out.
Oh yeah, glad you liked that DS. I try.

Well, my thoughts on temp boards were always that it would be more trouble than its worth. I didn't like the potential for disappointing a small subset of members every few weeks who felt that "their" temp board deserved to stay. In most cases, I don't think it's a problem to let the general boards absorb a temporary rush.
Although I must admit, the idea of a "Fad Board" does have a certain appeal to me. I don't know how well it would actually work (for one thing, calling something a "fad" is probably not going to win over the people who want to talk about the topics we're targeting), but it certainly put things across in the right perspective. Something I'll think about.
