Very few things in this world are universal. That’s part of what makes the world a great place. The different peoples of this world have different customs, language, culture and beliefs. While as of this moment, and much throughout history, these very differences have been met with violence and contempt, some people still revel learning about a way of life different than their own. One of the most popular and most enjoyable (in my opinion) to do this is by exploring the histories, legends and mythologies of the world’s culture groups.
Every society has its history. And through that history we learn where we come from, or where others come from, through that knowledge comes tolerance and understanding. History gives us a window to times both better and worse and, hopefully, teaches us to learn from them. One cannot truly appreciate the here and now, without first gaining a sufficient grasp of what has been.
Similarly, every society and culture has its share of legends and mythology. These tales have been passed down for decades, centuries and even millennia and remain as popular today as they were when they began. These anecdotes have been used to explain nature, warn us of danger and teach us valuable lessons in the way we live our lives. Myths and legends are the kinds of stories that inspire great novels, movies, plays, works of art and even the occasional invention. The interest is never lost.
And it is because of that undying interest and loyalty that I’m appealing to you to vote for the addition of a History/Mythology forum here on our beloved Nightly. Part of what makes this board so great (and my favorite spot in the whole World Wide Web) is the people that post here. So many people from all walks of life, from all over the world come here. While most of what brings us together is a common love from all things “geeky”, what I believe keeps us here is the chance to interact with so people different than those around us everyday, people with experience, knowledge and ways different than our own. Every person here has a story to tell and stories we’ve been told. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a common forum in which to discuss the great legends and myths and historical tales that have shaped our lives?
Keep in mind the wide selection of topics that would be available through this forum. If your idea of a History forum consists of people speading countless hours and posts debating the possible outcome of the Civil War had the south had factories of their own, or if you think all mythology revolves around Mt. Olympus and the Elysian Fields, you’re obviously in more need of this forum than those of us with a genuine interest in such things. History in itself is more than just dates and names and all that other stuff they cram down your throat in high school. The history of the world involves everything from the dinosaurs, to the Roman Empire, to the Renissance, to space exploration. Mythology involves more than the Greek and Roman gods. But if you really want to spend your time talking about Zeus and Aaron Burr, then finally, you’ll have an appropiate place to do so.
To me the greatest part of mythology and legends is how they blur the lines between fact and fiction, reality and fantasy. Was there really a man named Arthur who ruled a utopia named Camelot? Was there really a great city called Atlantis, that was swallowed by the seas? Was Achilles simply a great warrior or was he actually blessed by the gods and made indestructible?
I could spend countless hours debating this stuff with myself, but where’s the fun in that? What would be nice is a place to discuss these topics with people whose intellect and opnions I often admire and respect. And with so many new movies being made, like Troy and King Arthur, wouldn’t it be nice to not only discuss and pick apart these tales and their cinematic value, but also their accuracy and relevance to even modern life?
The beauty of History and Mythology is that there is something for everyone; war, romance, betrayal, friendship, familial relations and obligations, greed, anger, anything you find appealing…there’s a story for you.
So in conclusion, I believe that a History/Mythology forum would not only encompass subjects that appeal to every interest and/or expertise, but it also provides a place to discuss them and incorporate everyone’s own experiences, culture and beliefs. When the time comes please vote for the addition of a History/Mythology forum. I, for one, would definitely appreciate it, as would many others. Thanks y’all.

Gotta give her credit for actually stating a reason for wanting a new forum. Problem is that we've already decided on the new forum.
Starting next month we will have "The Virtual Hot Dog Stand".

Okay, but I'd like a food forum too.

I like the idea, but I don't know if the discussion would be anywhere near as good as it could be. The postings would probably be too few and far between and the quality might not be that great.
Of course, you never know until you try. I'd love to discuss this stuff.

Thanks for being an ass, can't get enough of that.
But seriously, of all the ideas thrown out there, I honestly see this one as having the greatest potential. The range of topics is almost endless and it mostly follows with the "geekiness" stereotype Nightly is all about. Knowing the general type of people Nightly attracts, I can see more people being into discussing King Arthur than lasagne or Porches. Ya know?
Another good point here, is that there really isn't ONE place to have these discussions already. They may be offtopic but they still also fit in well in the Movies, Printing Press, and Lyceum. It'd be really nice to have a place to consolidate these types of discussions. Many times have I wanted to talk about something I read, mainly on Arthurian legend, but I wasn't sure where to post them. With the new movie coming out, the Movies forum would be nice, but I don't want to talk about just the movie and, to be honest, the Printing Press doesn't get the traffic like I'd hope for.
But like I said, a History/Mythology forum would encompass such a range of topics I honestly feel there would be a little bit for everyone. Just think about it.
(Besides, I think Tank said we might be able to form more than one new forum. )

Can the Arthurian legend topics also include discussion on the historical accuracy of "MP and The Holy Grail?"

Well, I suppose so. Not that there are a whole lot of accuracies in that, but sure. It is actually legend based.
I've been a major Arthurian legend fan since I was little (starting with The Sword in the Stone Disney movie). And as I got older I got more and more into Greek, Roman, and Celtic mythology.
Plus, I've always found various historical eras utterly fascinating. And I know I can't be the only one.

The Lyceum could...but it's usually so full of Politics and Religion and other "touchy" subjects, so I know a lot of people who don't like to go there. The vibe is very volitile. This would be more laid back. Plus it encompasses other subjects that might not necessarily be Lyceum appropiate. Topics that include movies, books and other medium...not to mention just the legends and/or historical tales themselves.

Yeah, everything in the Lyceum that starts out with history will end up being about Hitler in about 10 posts.

I love mythlogy as much as anybody here on the boards probably. And I personally wouldn't bother going to a forum like that every day. Maybe once a week.

Once a week is good. There are a lot of specialized forums on here that don't get daily traffic. But they prosper nonetheless. I truly, honestly believe that if given the chance, a forum such as this would thrive in this community. You just watch and see.

No way.
Cerina- you know your forum is just going to attract the Lyceum crowd anyway.

I don't think once a week is going to get it done. lol Sure it would work for awhile, but if it only drew people in once a week, it wouldn't get enough traffic to justify it's own board.

There are plenty of forums here that people don't visit daily. Even if only half of the regular posters posted once a week, it'd still get it's fair share of traffic. I think your ideas of the topics that would be in there are too narrow. There would almost literally be a little something for everyone.
Carl- yeah, it probably would...but I don't see these discussions being as high strung and volitile as those in the Lyceum. And btw...it's not my forum, wasn't even my idea. Thank Jacen for this one.
Are there any people here who are members of SCA? Or any other historical reenactments? Civil war, colonial Williamburg? Are there any Wiccans or other Pagans? Major fans of Merlyn? American Indian decendants who have some Indian lore to share? Just to name a few people who no doubt would love a place to discuss their interests.
While I'm sure some dicussions would have the possibility of turning Lyceum-ish, I'm just hoping the Mod. and/or Admins would have the sense to move such discussions to the Lyceum. Not everything in there would be sure to spark heated debate, I can almost guarantee that.

I think that we actually had a history forum once... I believe it turned into the Lyceum. Or was incorporated into the Lyceum.
We also had a Computers forum... between these two boards you could really get your homework done... in fact, one of the captions I think was about homework...
Seriously, was I dreaming? I could have sworn we had a History board...
