I've noticed a lot of threads being closed (lately) when a new thread is made about the same game.
Are we not allowed to have more than one thread per game anymore?
Example.
I made a thread the day Fable came out titled "Has Anyone Bought Fable Yet" and I was just curious as to what people felt about the game.
Then a thread was made by another member titled "Dating In Fable" or something to that affect, and that thread was closed. Now, the only two things those topics have in common is the fact they both deal with Fable.
Shouldn't we expect to be more than one thread of one of the most anticipated games (for five years now) ever on Xbox or are we only allowed one thread per game at the videogame boards?
I liked the boards the way they use to be, to be quite honest they pretty much suck now, I wont be going there too often anymore.
If the PS3 is so incredibly superior to the Xbox 360 in game quality, game quantity, game breadth, game visuals, depth of the digital entertainment experience and price, God bless them.

It's redundant having a bunch of threads that are basically discussing the same thing. Not only does it make it more difficult to find the information/discussion you're looking for, but that also makes it less friendly for newbies, not the other way around.

Usually I'd agree, but Fable has been in the making for five + years, I think more than one thread is justifiable. Hell, there's a freaking videogame franchise here with an entire board, let alone more than one thread
We have an entire board dedicated to Final Fantasy yet we have to share a single thread for Halo and Halo 2 news. Redundant threads are what made the videogame boards what they are. You'll see...
Also, I've yet to visit a board anywhere (not just here at Nightly) with as many topics locked as there are at Nightly's vg boards. I wont be posting there as often anymore, those boards basically just suck now.

It's actually been a rule from the beginning about redundant threads. A majority of redundant threads that are closed usually are from newbies who would rather start a thread than search for one. It can be annoying especially when the thread in question is on the SAME PAGE! How well it is enforced is based on the moderators' descretion. Or if they are even there.
And you can't compare Fable to Final Fantasy. How many Final Fantasy games have been released in the time Fable has been in developement? Plus the FF guys fought for that forumn for over a year. They have the right to do what they want there, though I'm sure there aren't redundant threads there. That's Mac's territory though.

Mac is strict about topics, and for everyone's good. He tries to make it a non-FFXI forum, so it's open to everyone, and helps create FF topics and discussion. He does a wonderful job.
With the VG forum, it has always been a rule to close redundant threads. That one guy who posted that "Dating in Fable" topic obviously didn't even do a search for Fable on Nightly (let alone look at the front page of the VG forum), so I just linked him there. We can't always have new threads coming up about every single thing about a game, no matter how old or how awesome or how hyped up it is. Imagine how many freaking Halo 2 topics there would be if we didn't enforce the redundant-thread rule. I'm just doing my job, if you don't like it, that's just too bad.

it might be easier for people if you would retitle the fable thread so that they know that is the only place for fable discussion. just an idea.

I have to agree. This would at least serve as justification for an unwanted or seemingly reduntant thread/topic being locked down.

I love how every administrative decision in the Video Games board somehow gets dragged along with the Final Fantasy board. Jeebus. Using that arguement hasn't helped any cause yet, I don't know why it would start now.
The fact of the matter is that redundant threads are CLOSED on every board. And now that the Video Games forum actually has a moderator who is THERE more than once a month.. the rules are enforced there now too.

I sort of agree with AMU about this... I mean, yeah, redundancy should be nipped in the bud, but restricing every single tiny little bit of info about a game into one thread is lunacy. It's like forcing everyone to go into one room and have to try to scream over everyone else who were, for the most part, talking about something else entirely to begin with. A general topic thread (i.e. "The Official *game title here* Thread") about a game is great and that's always been so, but since when is it redundancy to post a seperate thread on a specific aspect of the game? It's not. A history book will not rant about the war of 1812 and the assassination of JFK all at once. That's why it has chapters. And for the same reason, that's why seperate threads are not redundancy, but flat out better organization. Seperate threads regarding the exact same specific aspect would be redundancy and I've felt that's always been the standard... Until now. AMU is right about this being a new thing. Not to mention that no n00b! is going to want to scan through page upon page upon page of one gigantic OMFG MAKE IT END thread in order to see if anyone's already addressed the specific question they want answers to, so logically, they post a new thread with it clearly stated in the topic title what they want to know or share. Is it wrong? Well, you can say it is all you want, but it's just common sense to me.

-------------------- Livin' life each day better than the next.
1: Multiple threads on a game such not be a problem.
2: In most cases I've seen threads closed down is because someone pops in, posts a question and leaves when a current discussion is going on in another marked thread.
How much is too much?
Thread1: Fable dating is cool Content: How do you date in Fable?
Thread2: Fable discussion Content: (lots of people talking about Fable)
Thread3: Fable is the best game ever OMGWTF!?!?!?!?! Content: ?!?!?!?!?!
Thread4: how do u get teh 1337 sowrdod in Fabel?? Content: tell me OMG!!?!!?!
Thread5: Fable spoilers Content: (spoilers on Fable)
Some of these should be kept open, some closed. Just my take. I back the mod that closed the thread.

Well I just figured maybe the mods should take into consideration a few things before just closing the thread so quickly.
I feel that mods should be able to use a fair judgement as to how many threads a particular game should be able to have so as long as the threads are at least discussing different aspects of the game. I think when a game so heavily anticipated is released that it deserves to have two or three active threads for a good week or so and of course it would settle down from there.
For instance if I have a thread titled "Getting Married in Fable..." I shouldn't have to be forced to start a topic titled "Fable Reaches Two Million in Sales Faster Than Any Xbox Game Before It!" IF that were to really happen say in a few days. And I shouldn't have to be forced into editing my post to change the thread title every day either, that gets old as well.
I'll be nowhere near this place when Halo 2 arrives, there's going to be far too much to discuss and I'll be doing it at TXB or hopefully IGN when that time comes. I would do it here, but it's just going to be a pain in the arss.

The two Fable threads that I did close were about discussion that were being talked about in the main Fable thread. One guy was asking about dating in Fable, that was the current discussion in the Fable Thread. I pointed him to there. Same with someone else's thread, asking if anyone bought Fable (and to discuss about it), and there was already a thread on that topic. I didn't wrongly close them just because it was more than one Fable thread, but because they were redundant.
EDIT: I can't believe I said Fable so many time in one post.

I just hate it when we run people off for reasons that are rather petty. I mean, if you're going to do that to a first-time poster, the least you can do is send them a private message to try and keep them around.

Yes... it's no coincidence that the first three letters in the word "redundant" are "r e d". It is evil! Redundancy is a horrible menace, and it must be eliminated at all cost! Posts: 13484 | From: A cold dark place | Registered: Dec 2000

I think a few are missing the inner point behind AMU's concern over this situation. I totally agree that things should be organized and easily obtainable by new faces that grace the board everyday, but videogames do not work in that sense. You have your initial first word of a game, the production process, rumors of that game, news, the actual game going gold, who/who does not have the game, opinions, afterthoughts, problems with the game, walkthroughs, secrets you might have, help,. We have never over the course of the VG forums existence limited all of that to one thread. Quite frankly it would have the opposite effect you are trying to create now. A newbie will have a pretty tough time digging through 30 pages of a "Subject". Because if you go take all the fable threads that have ever been created that is around how many pages you will have.
Again I totally agree with organization. But you need to just organize the actual phases of a game, like we always have. Prevent multiple threads of the same phase, but not one thread overall, that is ridiculous.
This is just an observation but it appears that this isn't actually what is taking place. It looks like to me new face topic starters are the only ones being limited to this new rule. But for instance, I started a Halo 2 a few days ago and it stayed opened. And that is because it is a different aspect of that game. Again if you try to keep everything to one thread it is going to suck away the interaction the board has had. There are too many phases in a games creation and release to limit things to one thread.
I'm with AMU on this one. But, I can also see the good in the theory of the new change. You need to find a better middle ground.

Which happens. We don't have one thread for five years worth of production. Just one active thread at a time. If a thread has several pages on it and is constantly getting bumped, it seems like the logical place to discuss the game. Every thread on a game shouldn't be restricted to a specific linear topic. Look at the Halo 2 thread as a perfect example. There's tons of conversation going on there with loads of information. It's also attracted a huge amount of newbies.

it seems to me that you guys actually agree but you are going at it from two different angles. you both agree that redundant threads should be closed right? well that is what was done. the discussion in the current fable thread was about dating so of course that thread was redundant and should be closed. it is my understanding that if Fable were to reach 2 million sales in a week or some such thing that you could create a seperate thread on that as long as it wasnt being discussed in the current fable thread. am i right? that is how you made it seem at least.

Sales threads and such I wouldn't close, as they're not discussing the actual game, but the game's performance critically/financially. Those seeking help with the game or to discuss the actual gameplay should head to the same large thread.
