I am not too sure if Nightly ever had an intent of keeping up with the times in its thesis, if it ever had one to begin with. But if it did, we are sort of behind the times in terms of what else is happening on the web right now.
It could be argued that a lot of the neato features offered around the web are passing trends. Like chat rooms for example. Those are basically extinct now. There used to be a lot of requests around here for a Nightly chat room, and thankfully it never surfaced. Blogs are a pretty good example of something that stuck around, but with the real time aspect of conversation and communication we have here, there's really no need for anything like that here.
Okay, so here's what I'm suggesting. What about things like RSS feeds or Podcasting? I'm pretty sure that UBB doesn't support stuff like this, but there are a lot of "add-on" services out there that could be plugged into our already existing html to do such things. I realize a lot of you guys are kind of conservative when it comes to additional things like this, but it might be worth considering. RSS feeds are a nifty feature that would allow folks to look at the titles of certain threads through thier browsers or additional programs without actually having to come here. Amongst a lot of other features that I can't remember right now. And a Nightly Podcasting program sure would be interesting. There are a few services out there that would allow us to submit audio entries that would be automatically edited together. Or perhaps we could designate someone once every other week or so to do something.
Anybody else who has any ideas for anything else, be sure to throw them in. I realize stuff like this isn't exactly essential, but I think that in addition to raising money, Nightly has to evolve and grow to survive, if indeed that's what we wanna do.

Good ideas, D-Ray. For a while now we've been going back and forth with the concept of expanding Nightly. I definitely think it's something worth discussing. It's all just a matter what people want from the site.
UBB actually does support RSS feeds. I can create a feed for new posts in one or all forums, new topics in one or all forums, and recent visitors for one or all forums. I just didn't know if there was a demand for it.
As for Podcasting...that's like an audio blog or an internet radio show, right? If there are moderators out there that have the technical know-how and desire to create a podcast for their forum, we'll certainly host the files!

JA, if that takes off, Flickr has a script where it remotely links to random images that can be displayed somewhere on the site. Like the Photo Album or Cantina for instance.
Anyways, I thought that might would be a start if you guys would like to try something special.

I suppose you need some RSS reader to see the feed. Anyone have a recommendation for a RSS Firefox extension?

I was wondering if we're still beta-testing for Infopop? I seem to recall that that was one of the reasons Nightly wasn't as "customized" as other UBB sites.

UBB.classic is no longer being developed. They've got a new product coming out but its release keeps getting pushed back. We are still a beta-testing board so we'll have it as soon as its available.

Not a non-message board feature, but it would be nice if the Reply textboxes were larger (or wider at least)...
For a non-message board feature, how about simple multiplayer online games? Where nightly members can play against each other. It might be too hard to implement. But it could be pretty popular, maybe some card games or chess, online "gambling" could be a laugh (poker or blackjack etc)? that sort of thing.

Games would be pretty cool, buy yeah, hard to implement.
RSS feeds are great, I use 'em religiously. I'd be happy to subscribe to some of the forums here by that means. Also, a Podcast would be cool! Have some people get together once a week or something and chat it up, then let people download it.

I have an idea that I've never really gotten around to putting into motion for a geek encylopedia. A directory on all manner of geek subjects covered by Nightly. Stuff like Star Wars, sci-fi shows, comic books and the like. Using the open-sourcewiki software that powers Wikipedia, we could create a general encylopedia that any member could contribute to. It'd probably be a lot of work, but it could fun to have.
