Would it be inappropriate to start a thread in the music or computer forum about selling my ipod?

So at least for now you should hold off on starting that thread.
Hope that helps... even if it looks like a definite negatory. I may be overruled by an admin or the appropriate mod, however, so be sure to check back in this thread at a later time.
Or start a web page with all the relevant information on, then link to it in your sig, that seems to be acceptable round these parts... Might get you a bit more exposure than just a single thread too...

hmm, i jsut realised that by making this thread people are now aware you are wanting to sell your ipod and could maybe PM you with enquiries? then you could give them the relevant information, only problem being not everyone will view this thread
I didn't think I'd have a problem selling it because it's in good condition etc and I only wanted $200 (CDN) for it, which is a pretty good deal.

Prefaced with a big fat IMHO because the Admins really haven't discussed this yet, but I'll be happy to get the discussion rolling:
IMHO, I would be willing to grant a reprieve to established members in the area of "advertisements" and "solicitations". We've let longtime members plug their (non-message board) websites and their assorted non-Nightly projects. I've seen a few folks sell things here and there, too. In my mind it's about intent: why did you register here at all? Those people who register a username and start hawking their wares right away need to be sacked. Those people who've been around for years and are a genuine part of the community...yeah, we wouldn't mind seeing your stuff.
That's for established members, though. If the Human Torch wants to sell off all his M.A.S.K. vehicles so he can buy a new ROTS bib set for his new daughter, I trust him enough to let it fly. But no way are we gonna let every newbie jump right into the fray and set up shop on our corner without references or credentials. Beyond the fact that they haven't put in enough community time to earn that privilege, there's a key issue of liability. If two of y'all enter into a sales agreement and one of you welshes on the other, would Nightly be held responsible in any way? If someone were vengeful enough enough to seek paid legal recourse because they sent Joey Ramone's Junior-High Sweetheart a check for fifty bucks but the Post Office lost that Urotsukidoji DVD they were promised, and if that someone were undiscriminating enough to name Nightly.net as a defendant...we're gonna need more than Google ads and our already generous ComSup backers to stay afloat for twenty-four hours past that point.
(The above reason -- aside from complete lack of free time and distaste for complex financial structuring -- may be the primary reason why you don't see JA setting up an eNightly auction forum, taking percentages of the grosses to fund our server fees, and scheduling an annual Admins' conference in Aruba.)
So. IMHO: if Red 5 or Lady Palpatine or I have met you in person, or if you have a registration date over three years old and at least a four-digit post count, chances are you're probably okay to go as far as I'm concerned, provided you conduct yourself properly and don't start any mob scenes. Anyone else...will have to wait and see what the other Admins think. I guarantee you there's no way we'll permit something of this nature without some kind of double standard in place.
(Special note for the mentally stunted: pyramid schemes and chain letters will still get you banned six ways from Sunday, and are a symptom of terminal unlovability. Thank you.)

Of a more specific note: I offer nothing for the iPod because iPod + dialup = paperweight. Thanks anyway.

Sorry to be chiming in just now, but I'm thinking there's absolutely no harm in being a little lenient in that aspect of the TOS as well, with Six's requisite of at least being an established, contributing member. I don't see the harm in going to a Music or C&I forum (the latter of which could quite frankly USE the traffic), and legitimately offering a deal between other members. Beyond that Six said it more eloquently (and more amusing) than I could.
Long story short, I personally can find no reason to have any reservations about you doing this, Decepticon.

ok thanks. I'm going to post it in the music forum, because if the C&I needs more traffic, that means less of a chance people will see it

I just made that example up. But I bet it could happen. Maybe if we all PM Torch at the same time and ask nicely, he'll give 'em up for us. But everyone should keep in mind that the S&H charges from Alaska to their hometown will probably bankrupt 'em.
