Maybe bump up the "Entertainment" forums and move the Star Wars forums below them?!?
One of the reasons this board is having less traffic I believe is because we're labelling ourselves to prospective new members as a Star Wars ONLY board, with oh, some other off-topic stuff.
I think NN needs to RE-establish itself as an entertainment board, instead of a SW board that it was started as years ago.
Having the SW forums at the top of the board is just not very inviting, IMO. We're getting a "certain" crowd these days, if you know what I mean?
Start with the general entertainment forums, and then have the film specific ones below.
Just a suggestion.

I didn't realize that this board, as a whole, was getting less traffic. Can anyone confirm this & when it started, just out of curiosity?

Point is, Star Wars is dying down. Kind of dates and labels this place with having those 3 forums as the first thing people see.

Part of me wants to keep things as they are, given the fact that this entire site was founded around Star Wars, and at one point consisted of nothing BUT Star Wars threads.
But on the other hand, times are changing, and Star Wars is dying down.
We've had various ideas over the years to expand nightly into more of a geek-entertainment forum. We'd even thought about starting a sister site like aintitcool, or newsrama to be a SOURCE as well as a discussion base... but the truth is, these things require a lot of time and effort.
If you're just talking about not having stars at the top of the forum list, I don't think that's a big deal. I don't think new people see that at the top and wander away. Googling a subject takes you directly to forums, not the main page.
Truth is, at last check, YES indeed the SWS forum gets the most traffic, making this all kind of a moot point.
Now if somebody wanted to canvas the internet and get us a few thousand new people to flood into the Lost forum for example, I think a change might be easier to consider.
The truth is though-- this has always been a Star Wars site first and for-most. All of the non-Star Wars threads simply happened because we wanted to converse with the same set of people, on different subjects. It's just grown a bit...

That's really what I'm after. I didn't mean overhaul as much as switching forum order.

Looking at the main page, it seems to me that just about anyone who sees the three Star Wars forums will surely see the LOTR, Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, and Indiana Jones at about the same time. I don't see how that would necessarily leave the visitor with the impression that Nightly's only about Star Wars.

Nightly.net is written in a SW font and there are only Star Wars ads at the top.
Look, it's not a big deal, but I figured other forums were busier, and it's time to put away the action figures. SW is dead.
Carry on.

I've always wanted this and thought it would be really cool. I still think that if you set up something like Movable Type as a "stencil" of sorts, it wouldn't take much time or effort other than the initial setup and design.
It would just require a number of people as dedicated news posters. Just the same as the moderators that we have now. Post an article or two each day along with the corresponding link to the thread of conversation of it, and bang you've got a really compelling source of news.

Whatever you want to do to describe the set-up, it sure isn't hurting The Arena or the Lando System, two forums that are nowhere near the top & always rank in the top three if not #1.

But that has a lot to do with Google searches. The most popular threads in the Arena and Lando are the picture threads, usually the pictures threads of women. If someone types in a search for Trish Stratus or WWE women or even celebrities, they come up with Lando and Arena threads. They're always the most popular threads in their respective forums, even when they haven't had new posts in months.

True, but several new members have joined Nightly to join in the discussion over at The Arena recently. There are almost half a dozen new members in the last few months or so that have joined Nightly & visit The Arena almost exclusively. When wrestling is doing really well on TV, there is also a lot of visitor traffic for the Raw threads, PPV threads, and threads about firings/signings/storylines/etc.
The "Todays Active Topics" link also sheds some more light on this as well, as sometimes there's a correlation between the active topics spiking their forums visitor percentage. The aforementioned three forums usually appear a lot on that list, and sometimes the Cantina appears really busy on that list.

I never pegged that as SW font, but looking at it I guess it could be. Doesn't bug me and I don't think visitors will be pegging the font as a reason to stay or leave.
As to the Google Ads Banner. That banner is customized to whatever you've been looking at on Nightly... over a fifteen minute period (I believe). If you are just to the site, the google ad will grab info from what it thinks you're looking at and try and tie the ad into your interest. As you surf Nightly, visiting other forums, the ads will change according to what Google thinks your looking at and thus interested in.

Have you ever taken a look at those things after a few minutes over in Lando? I once got an ad for saving huge bucks on Bin Laden oil paintings and another for a Vietnamese singles site.

Yeah the Ad banners are funny sometimes. I recently saw some odd ones in the Save Point. I was reading the Jack Thompson thread and the ads banner was all about self defense for women, martial arts, victims of crime etc etc. Nothing to do with the forum, but Google Ads must have been pulling what it thought was my interests based on words that were in the thread... ie violence, murder, attacks etc etc.

Nightly started as a Star Wars board. It's morphed into an entertainment/geekdom board, and there are many popular forums that have nothing to do with Star Wrars. But IMO, I don't think it hurts to keep Star Wars at the top, for nostalgia's sake.
And the statement "SW is dead" is subject to debate.

The way I see it nightly is dying and does anyone really care? I figure everyone made their friends a long time ago and they are just instant messaging instead of posting on the boards themselves.

The way I see it, is that Nightly is NOT dying. TONS of people visit this board everyday and have for quite some time who have little to no interest in Star Wars.
I did not come to Nightly for Star Wars reasons and I'm sure not leaving just because the Star Wars hype is dying off.

Well, if we were going to move anything, I think that the entertainment forum should be above the popular series forum. I think it should be that way because we need to establish that we have a general tv and movie forum before people see that we have forums dedicated to just that series or movie.

All i know is that I'm not the biggest fan of Star Wars, but it didnt deter me from Nightly. Theres no absoulute need to change it all about, it doesnt hurt the chances of any new members signing up.

Most of the "younger folks" only know of Van Halen because they are mentioned in that "1985" song that is out now. I just had this very enlightenment bestowed upon me on Sunday when I was talking to some teens. Van Halen, Guns & Roses, Nirvana, Metallica and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are all classic rock station fodder nowadays. You can forget about most teens knowing who Boyz II Men, REM, Gloria Estefan and even U2 are aswell. Face it peeps, we're "old" now. One teen that I spoke to even went so far as to say, "U2 is that band that Coldplay is like huh?" To which I replied, "Except for one song, Coldplay sucks. Don't compare them to U2." Although at that point I was a grumpy old guy and no one wanted to talk music anymore.
