There was a topic in the Politics Board about the movie Jarhead. While I haven't seen the movie and don't intend to, I think that there are political parts of the movie that could be discussed. I understand that there were two topics made, one also in the movie forum, however I disagree that the movie forum is the best place for the topic.
A couple months ago we had a topic which outlined possible connections between Revenge of the Sith and the Bush administration. (we had two, the duplicate was closed, if I remember correctly). This topic wasn't closed because it brought forward discussion of the politics of the movie.
The same could be said about the Jarhead thread in the politics board. I think it has the potential for actual discussion about the politics of the movie itself, politics being the main focus. It's obvious that the opening post wasn't talking about plot structure or character development which would make it appropriate for the movie board.
While I can't say that I have anything to personally add to the topic at this time, I do think it should be left open barring any violations of the TOS.

I'd also like to add that if we were to move all topics that revolved around forms of media from the politcs board then the Farenheit 9/11 topics would have to be moved as would any topics which cover things like, say the 100 most cesored books, public schools reading Mark Twain, drugs/sex on television, or even "books that promote homosexuality." Remember when those were banned? I'm pretty sure there was a topic about that as well.

I think the topic started should have started a lyceum thread that was a little more inviting to debate as opposed to the identical declarative I HATE THIS MOVIE that was posted in the movies forum.

I agree that it wasn't the most inviting thread, but most threads start off with somebody blowing off steam and then defending their statements while half of the board attacks them.

I personally haven't formed a strict opinion either way just yet on the P&WE thread itself, but I do believe that our Movies Forum could sure use a shot in the arm like this right now. I dunno if a Jarhead political discussion is the way to achieve that, but what the hey.

Well, since I closed it on the Politics board, perhaps I should comment...
I actually did somewhat regret closing it down.
Perfectsim, you're right. It could lead to interesting discussions perfect for the P&WE forum. But, when I first read it, I thought it was (A) an inappropriate way of promoting discourse and that it would (B) lead mostly to conversations about the film itself rather than the political implications.
Having said that...
Perfectsim, you raise an excellent point about Fahrenheit 9/11. I'm not opposed to reopening the thread if I'm wrong about (B). I'm still a little bit leary about (A), though.
I'll have to appeal to the Admins for advice on whether to reopen it. (And of course Pong could reopen it if he wanted so, since I'm really just assisting him). It doesn't matter to me either way. I have no qualms with reopening it or with leaving it closed.
In the mean time, Perfectsim, I would invite you to start your own thread on Jarhead in the P&WE forum. Hopefully one that's a bit more conducive to good conversation. I have no problem with the topic, just the way that it was presented. Maybe I shouldn't worry about that, though.

I'd say start a new Politics thread rather than reopen the previous short-lived attempt. Whoever restarts it, it might not hurt to include a link to the Movies thread as a sort-of "What Has Gone Before" for those just tuning in.

I followed the thread in the movie forum and I think that pretty much everything has already been said on the subject and I don't see much of a point in starting a new thread in the lyceum or opening up the old one.
In addition I haven't yet seen the movie and have no intentions to, so I feel unqualified to start a thread about it.
I agree about the presentation not being conducive, for the most part, to a discussion. There are a lot of topics that suprise me, though.
Edit: I wrote this before I saw Six's reply.

I haven't seen the movie but I'm currently reading the book, so my motive is partly selfish.

Perhaps a better topic would be the accuracy of entertainment media whose subject matter revolves around war, with examples (like Jarhead) given for discussion.

You could probably throw Platoon, Apocalypse Now, Three Kings, and Full Metal Jacket into the mix, too.

Umm... Where are the completely out of context movies? See, it's funny because "Small Soldiers" is completely different from "Apocalypse Now Redux." Most of the films there are more propoganda pieces than social commentary.

Maybe you should create a topic to discuss that.
