I don't know if this is the correct place to ask this but here goes. Is there a thread here that details the history of Nightly Net? I've visited many message boards over many years and I've never seen one quite like this. There is just a unique vibe here that I'm not sure I can put into words. For one thing, the highly ranked and scary administrators post here as fans just like everyone else. That's uncommon. For another thing, you just roped me into becoming a Community Supporter and if you had any idea how tight I am with money this is a MAJOR accomplishment and something no message board has ever been able to do before.
So, since I like it here so much, I'm curious about how it came about. Who started Nightly Net? Did it begin as a message board devoted to a single subject like Star Wars and grow from there? Who are these scary adminstrators and how did they achieve that rank? (So far I've run across four, Rock, Mara Jade Skywalker, Jason Solo, and Mandard) Is member number 1 still around? Is there a plan for world domination?
Inquiring minds wanna know.

Nightly was started by Chris Sherman as the message board for the, now defunct, www.episodeii.com on June 1, 1999 and originally only had the Episode II Predictions board. Soon a member named war4theunderdog started posting beatnik poetry and other things. So a community board was created, which war4 renamed The Lando System and which quickly became even more crazy than its current incarnation.
Following that, there was an explosion of new boards on the young community and a side-project, comiccollectors.com, which is now, sadly defunct. Other websites were allowed to host boards here as well. Most of them didn't work out, but Star Wars Chicks remains.
Amongst the legendary adventures from the early days are the board wars (in which Lando and Predictions fought), the Amidala777 incident (in which Amidala777 became moderator of the Predictions board for a day and was overthrown by a bunch of jerks in love with Porkins), the Jedi Council (a group of "senior" members that had been around since the board's inception 3 weeks ealier who formed a semi-advisory group and which were later also overthrown), Chris Sherman's departure and handing the keys to the kingdom to The Jedi Apprentice, and the Great Blackout in which Chris Sherman forgot to pay the bills and this place disappeared for about 2 months. Later on the Cantina was created when former administrator and moderator of the Predictions board Darth Palpatine began dumping all the off-topic threads from that board onto a board called Star Wars: Miscellaneous. Since it was quickly becoming a community board, I suggested it be renamed and, after flirting with International House of Porkins (which is was briefly named a few weeks ago after the death of the actor who portrayed him) and Watto's Junkyard, a vote was held and the Watto's Junkyard supporters switched their votes to the Cantina at the last minute to stop the Porkins idea.
Other boards and adminsitrators have come and gone since then. The Harry Potter board showed up just before the first movie opened, the Arena actually failed once before being reopened to its current success. Enemies were made, marriages happened, 6 1/2 years went by.

There've been several threads reminiscing over Nightly's history, and plenty of threads asking questions about it as well. This can be the latest incarnation. I agree that there's a vibe here that I haven't seen anywhere else--for better or for worse, that (plus some incredible individuals I've gotten to know as a result of Nightly) is what's kept me coming back for the last 6.5ish years. And thank you for donating!

The current admins are Rock, Mara, Jason, Mandard, NumberSix, and The Jedi Apprentice. Mara and Jason are the two latest additions, Mara being the first female admin (woo!). JA's been an admin for the longest period of time, and he does a ton of behind-the-scenes stuff.

Member number 1 has now been renamed to Nightly.net Admins (click), but originally it was just a "test" name.

*quickly shoves folder titled "PLAN FOR WORLD DOMINATION" out of sight* Er, no, not at all.

The great thing about the internet is that nearly everything worth saving is saved... http://www.waybackmachine.org/ has stored quite a few versions of Nightly. Check out whats left of Nightly.net (10/12/99).

Thanks guys, lot of good stuff here for a nosy guy like me.
Very interesting that all this sprang from Star Wars. That helps explain why there are so many Star Wars handles here compared to Star Trek and other popular franchises.

ShadowDog-- that is indeed while there are a LOT of star wars handdles here from people whoi may not seem to post in SW forums. You'll find a lot of people HAD Star Wars names and edited them as timed passed.
Cantankerous Jedi = Tank Grand Admiral Exodus = Exodus etc
If I had a nickel for every person to drop a "Darth" title...

I would check nightly every day and for two months it was gone. It was so sad.

Emperor Oji Bwa and Sith Lord Indigo also were Admins for a period.

I mainly dropped mine because I post a lot, and having a long username sort of clutters things up IMO. Though from day one, I was always Exodus or Ex to those who didn't feel like typing out the rest. GAE sometimes, but meh.
