quote:You've got a cell phone at one ear, an iPod at the other. You know that Blackberry is now a verb and Spam is not only canned meat. But just how did we get here? Blame William Shatner--yes, that William Shatner--Captain Kirk. We'll boldly go where few have gone before to reveal how scientists, inspired by the series, would revolutionize medicine and are surpassing the far-out vision of the future foreshadowed in Star Trek in the 1960s. From cell phones to computers to even leading-edge medical advancements, this 2-hour special explores how those sci-fi inventions have now permeated everyday life as we know it. Hosted and narrated by Shatner and based on his book, I'm Working on That, we'll meet the brightest minds of Silicon Valley and the Trek-inspired inventions that have help change the world.
Catch it tonight on the History Channel at 8pm Eastern, and 12am Eastern. Or later this week Thursday March 16 at 8pm Eastern or March 17 at 12am Eastern.

A couple months ago? I thought this was completely new. Anyway, it was quite amusing. All Hail, The One True Shat!

This reminds me of an article i read in a sci-fi mag. years ago which posed the question: Which has had an impact more on our culture Star Wars or Star Trek? If were talking about POP culture i think its SW hands down; but clearly Trek wins when it comes to its impact on our society.

The show was moderately amusing. A lot of the information was stuff that has been talked about before for other Star Trek docs. Shatner made it watchable. The second hour, though, was less about the effect Star Trek has had on science innovation and more about how Star Trek was ruined by Behr, Berman and Braga. Seriously. Out of the whole show I enjoyed hearing Shatner subtly and not so subtly rip everything Star Trek since BBB took control.
Favorite "skits" from the doc:
Shatner trying to get Deanna Troi to read his thoughts.
Shatner talking about "women in command" while Janeway and Seven "listened".

Definitley THT - I couldn't help but laugh when Shatner says "And the worst was yet to come" over the opening for Enterprise. All together, the summation that Star Trek diverted further and further from what Star Trek is supposed to be, away from Roddenberry's vision, was what I was thinking about what happened to Star Trek but I'd not quite had the pieces put together properly.
Voyger kind of bounced around I think. I liked lots of it but B&B [and B?] kept the show's direction shifting so "quickly" the series never had a chance to live up to it's potential.
Enterprise was definitely rock bottom. Unfortunately due to B&B [and B?] the series didn't, it couldn't, really become great until Coto's portion of the last season. In retrospect, for a series of ENT's nature I believe it would've been best to get as many of the folks involved with the production and writing of TOS as possible - their advice on the show's tone and stories would've been invaluable.
TV Land is starting a new series called Living in TV Land. It kicks of this Wednesday at 11pm Eastern/Pacific right after the TV Land Awards - the first episode featurest the one and only William Shatner.

He's getting there. But for me he hasn't reached that same level of awesomeness.
