quote:NEW YORK -- Isaac Hayes has quit "South Park," where he voices Chef, saying he can no longer stomach its take on religion.
Hayes, who has played the ladies' man/school cook in the animated Comedy Central satire since 1997, said in a statement Monday that he feels a line has been crossed.
"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," the 63-year-old soul singer and outspoken Scientologist said.
"Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored," he continued. "As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."
"South Park" co-creator Matt Stone responded sharply in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, saying, "This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology... He has no problem _ and he's cashed plenty of checks _ with our show making fun of Christians."
Last November, "South Park" targeted the Church of Scientology and its celebrity followers, including actors Tom Cruise and John Travolta, in a top-rated episode called "Trapped in the Closet." In the episode, Stan, one of the show's four mischievous fourth graders, is hailed as a reluctant savior by Scientology leaders, while a cartoon Cruise locks himself in a closet and won't come out.
Stone told The AP he and co-creator Trey Parker "never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin."
Disappointing, but I'd have to agree with Parker and Stone. It's not like South Park has ever held back when it came to religion. It's a little disingenuous for Hayes only now to have problems with it.

He's a hypocrite, plain and simple. I don't like saying it, but its true. He's been a part of this show since its inception and he's only finding out now that the show is willing to parody ANYTHING? All too coincidental that he gets mad and leaves when it hits too close too home for him. Classic hypocracy.

That is sad. I suppose that I will be the one to third the above. The show will be weird without Chef...

Well he is being contradictory. In some ways so am I, because I recognize everyones rights to believe what they want, and yet I look down on people that are scientology members.

Mandard, you know you're only agreeing with Parker and Stone because they say Mormons are the right ones.
I like South Park because it makes fun of everybody. Nothing is sacred to them. If you're going to make fun of people, that's the way to go.

I hope they make an episode which makes fun of Hayes/Chef over this. That would be fitting.

Yeah, but he didn't say he was wrong in the past. He just said it was wrong to make fun of people's religion. He admitted no guilt. The man who had no problem delivering:
Stan: Why would God let Kenny die, Chef? Why? Kenny's my Friend. Why can't God take someone else's friend?
Chef: Stan, sometime God take those closest to us, because it makes him feel better about Himself. He's a very vengeful God, Stan. He's all pissed off about something we did thousands of years ago. He just can't get over it. So he doesn't care who he takes: children, puppies, it don't matter to him, so long as it makes us sad. Do you understand?
Stan: Then why does God give us anything to start with?
Chef: Well, look at it this way: if you want to make a baby cry, first you give it a lollipop. Then, you take it away. If you never give it a lollipop to begin with, then you would have nothing to cry about. That's like God, who gives us life and love and health just so that he can tear it all away and make us cry, so he can drink the sweet milk of our tears... You see, it's our tears, Stan, that give God his great power.

Being a person with a disability, I started distancing myself from the show when they introduced Timmy and Jimmy.

I agree that this sucks, and that it's very hypocritical on the part of Hayes.
In reality, one of the things that is great about "South Park" is that they openly "attack" all sides of of an argument. They don't really claim that one side is right and one side is wrong, they tend to logically address the faults/weaknesses(sp?) presented by both/all sides of an argument.
I don't think that Parker (who is the main contributor) and co. really wish harm on anyone. They simply want others to think about the choices they make.
Even though Hayes was a big name in the age of "funk/disco"'s popularity, this was his introduction to a new generation. He just burned that bridge.
Oh well.

But they have never truely insulted the characters for being disabled, only Jimmy when he became a steroid addict. They have been treated like the rest of the characters.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Personally, I think Hayes wanted to retire from showbiz and for some stupid reason felt that taking a swipe at his former employers might improve his image in some way. Yet another reason why Scientology is looked upon as a cult rather than a fully fledged religion.

if the point was to improve his image, then he failed... pretty miserably.

I kinda see you point there. I guess it just pushed my buttons a bit. I have completely quit South Park, I still tune in once in awhile. It just bugged me when they first introduced the characters. That, and also some of the Catholic episodes.
Or, maybe, I'm just getting old.

I'd dare Cruise to not promote M:I-3. Not only is he one of the film's producers doesn't he also have one of those receipts deals?
He'd only be hurting his bank account.

I think he'd benefit from NOT promoting M:I-3. He's wacko and people are sick of his sh*t. He's better off having Ving Rhames and Phil Hoffman promote it publically. I bet that's the plan all along! SouthPark is just a red herring...
Trey & Matt rock.

I don't think so, I feel the same way. It's hard to stay into ANY series that runs past 6-7 years. How long has South Park been on, for crissakes? Anything gets old if it lasts long enough even if the quality remains the same. I blink out of the Simpsons for a couple years at a time before I get back into it for the same reason.
Having said all that, Trey and Matt are awesome when they get ticked off about something. LOL
