'Passion' Marketing Firm to Get Word Out on 'Narnia'

Motive Marketing, which handled much of the "grass roots" marketing of Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, has acknowledged on its website that it has been hired by Disney to design and manage "an extensive Faith and Family Outreach marketing and publicity campaign" for the studio's upcoming The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. The film has been described in some publications as "The Passion for kids." In an interview appearing in the London Telegraph last week, Jim Burns, president of HomeWord, a Christian broadcasting network, described the movie as "wonderful from the Christian point of view." He added, "The Christian community will provide opportunities for people to take their kids to this movie through block-booking and church outings and we will be making sure that Christians go in droves."

Yes, I know that CoN is intended as Christian allegory, but is the audience for this the same kind of hard-core fundamentalist base that so heartily embraced Passion? I am waiting for the fallout from the people who will go based on this kind of marketing and then get all flippy because of its "promotion" of witchcraft, paganism, etc.

Never thought of it quite that way. But I guess that's pretty accurate.

You make it sound like it was some small niche. The film made $370 million y'know.

If you think Harry Potter is supposed to promote witchcraft and Wicca among kids, then you can follow that same logic to Narnia.

The reality is that I'm sure Hollywood will tone down any Christian imagery in the movie to make it sell in non-Christian nations.

Like New York and California.

The director and producers say they're going to try to NOT to that, actually.

Actually, when I saw the trailer for this, I thought it looked more like 'Lord of the Rings Jr.'.

I know. Exactly. What you mean.

Is it just me, or are they really hoping on hitting on the Tolkien phenomenon here?

It's not like the books are entirely dissimilar. I mean, Tolkien and Lewis were friends. They share a lot of qualities.

Yeah, but isn't it kind of strange that as soon as LotR is a HUGE hit, makes so much money, etc., Disney begins turning out ANOTHER fantasy series, similar in plot?

Just sayin'.

Not strange at all.

Exec#1 "Look at that movie. It made a SH*Tload of money. Whay don't we do something like that?"

Exec#2 "No way. WHy follow up in a proven market that's is ripe for the picking? We would make millions, but people will think it's strange. I'll pass."

I didn't mean say it was unusual. I was saying that it the making of the second movie isn't completely independent of the success of the first. Look at the context, KFJ--we were talking about how the previews of Narnia made it look like LotR: Cont'd.

My best friend, his mom wounldn't let him watch Duck Tails because she thought it was "devilish". I am sure some Christian group will get upset over something in this movie.

Hmm, I think it'll be a split...there'll be some who actually appreciate the allegory and use it as a marketing tool, and then there'll be those take the magic to be "work of the devil" a la Harry Potter, like Nominal Me said. And, after all, it was written by a Catholic, dear lord! I'm sure there'll be some extremist groups that won't want our scum teaching their kids theology...

Arica

Lewis wasnt a Catholic, J.R.R. Tolkein was. Lewis was an Anglican, big difference.

On another note, the idea of this being marketed as The Passion of Christ for kids makes me run in terror. Ugh. "Chicken Soup for the Wardrobe Soul"

"The Purpose Driven Wardrobe" ....hmmm think you can market anything else to make money off of people?

Because DT has an element of supernatural to it. My point is that some people will take everything too seriously.

There are some Christian groups who probably won't go see it because of the witch and the magic. Some that would go see it and not Harry Potter will do so because the witch in Narnia is evil and most of the witches/wizards in HP are not.

Everyone has their own opinion on the subject.

#1: C.S. Lewis was a Christian.

#2: If any Christians get their panties in a twist over the witch they need to loosen up.

#3: I and my family are Christians, and the witch hardly fazed us at all (we are also LOTR fans). Dude, evil needs to be portrayed in movies and books, because withiout some kind of badness there would be no story and it would be soooo boring.

#4: I totally don't get the whole marketing for Christians thing. I mean, every person has been waiting for a movie of CoN probably evere since they read the books and knew it could be done. So of course like everyone wanted to go see it.

#5: Who CARES if it came right after LOTR. The fact is . . . it came.

#6: Passion of the Christ for Kids? I loved the Passion (as much as a Christian could love seeing their Jesus' gory death (and then RESSURRECTION!) could)but I really can't see any similarities except the fact that Aslan was 'crucified' as well.

#7: Dude, we are insane. Just some differently than others. (and some a little too uptight.)

i really liked this movie and i dislike christianity. while the christian meaning is somthing that some people can choose to look into, i didn't feel that i was tricked into watching 2 hours of christian propoganda. the way that i see it, i am not a christian and i don't believe in the bible, but the bible has got some really entertaining stories in it. besides using the logic that this movie is a kid version of the passion.... might as well say that the matrix is the computer nerd version of the passion.

oh and about the witch... i dunno guys i was tempted to go pick up "Wicca for Dummies"

the notion that this is LOTR jr. is not really a problem to me. i really enjoyed how this movie made me feel like a little kid again. it makes you feel like you are in a fairy tale rather than in a D&D campaign.
